NYP policy on attendance at domestic burglaries. |
Our policy states we will attend every report of Burglary Dwelling (homes) where feasible i.e. where the complainant is available it will be graded as a Priority call. Where they are unavailable, or through further conversation it may be an appointment to suit them. There is a focus on scene preservation, crime prevention and vulnerability of the victim.
You will see the attendance rates since April this year are generally over 96% and in some months higher – it is unlikely it will get to 100% due to the reasons outlined below but this demonstrates a consistent application of attendance policy.
All those which are not attended are reviewed by supervision in the Force Control Room. Some of the reasons for non-attendance are due to the incident being initially finalised as an ‘other’ crime type e.g. criminal damage, vehicle-crime, suspicious circumstances) with appointments created, but then subsequently crimed as burglary after that appointment has taken place and the circumstances become clearer.
A small number of reports are made where the victim notifies NYP several weeks after the crime has taken place and they may then refuse to engage or where forensic or witness opportunities are low.
The attendance data also includes where a Crime Scene investigator attends as the first resource.
NYP monitor have monitored this for some time and provide data on a quarterly basis to the HO.
